Omagari Hanabi Introduction

Annually on the last Saturday of August, Daisen City hosts the National Fireworks Competition on the Omono Riverbank in Omagari, proudly displaying the country’s finest technique and tradition.

Selected from the country’s best, 30 hanabi artists compete with their refined craft to invoke wonder in an audience of around 700,000 spectators sprawled across the riverbank.

Omagari Hanabi began on 26–27 August 1910 as the first Ou Rokken Enka Kyoshinkai, held as entertainment during the annual ceremony at Suwa Shrine. Its scale greatly expanded from the fourth year into the National Fireworks Competition and although suspended for several years due to war, celebrated its centenary in 2010.

2018 marked a turning point for Omagari Hanabi, where the concept of Seasonal Hanabi was introduced to differentiate themed seasonal displays from the main competition in summer under the Omagari Hanabi name.

Artists personally fire their own shells at Omagari Hanabi, a unique aspect that adds to the prestige of the competition.

Fireworks reflected on the surface of the Omono River and set against the Dewa Hills in the distance are truly spectacular. Hanabi artists blessed with Japan’s best stage in sound, colour and safety, craft designs and ideas with no regard for budget, pouring their souls into crafting each individual shell to the highest possible level.
